How To Fix A Refrigerator Freezing Your Food

How To Stop Food Freezing In The Fridge

Your fridge isn't meant to freeze your food, that is your freezer's job. So what can cause it? There can actually be several reasons:

  • Firstly - and most commonly - it could just be that your temperature is set too low. The optimum temperature for food to be stored in a fridge is 4 °C, so make sure your fridge is set between 3-4 °C to prevent freezing, and keep your food at its best.

  • Another common mistake is pushing vegetables to the back of your fridge. This results in them being pressed up against the back panel, which is one of the coldest parts of the fridge. Because vegetables have a high moisture content, being positioned here can make them freeze. Common culprits are cucumbers, courgettes, lettuce, and fruits like strawberries.

Check these things if you have a build up of ice in your fridge:

  • Opening the door frequently, and for long periods can deposit moisture onto the cooling surfaces of your refrigerator, which then could freeze.

  • If your fridge isn't closing properly, then the same thing mentioned above can happen. It may be the fault of your rubber seals, that can easily get damaged or loosen. If this is the case, it's most likely you will need to replace your seals. This is something not to ignore as your seals do a big job, keeping the cold air tight in your fridge, saving you energy and money, as well as keeping your food fresh.
