How To Fix A Noisy Refrigerator

Have you got a noisy fridge?

Of course, it’s natural for the fridge to make some noise. However, modern devices are relatively quiet, and sometimes the noises just don’t sound right. This is usually a sign that there is something wrong with your refrigerator. However, don’t fear! Usually it is quite simple to fix.

First, you need to determine where to sound is coming from. The sound could be coming from three different sides of your refrigerator, and determining which can help you solve the problem quicker.

The Back

If the noise is coming from the back, then there could be three different components that could be the cause: the condenser fan, the defrost timer, or the compressor.

The condenser fan is located in the back of the fridge and can sometimes be covered by a panel. Usually the noise is because of a dust or debris build-up between the blades. You can try cleaning this either with a vacuum cleaner, or gently brushing away the blockages (make sure to be careful as fan propellers can be very delicate). If there doesn’t appear to be any build-up, a faulty motor may be the cause of the noise. If so, you have the option of replacing your motor.

The defrost timer is usually situated at the bottom of the fridge near the front. If you can hear the noise from this area, then unfortunately the timer will need replacing completely.

The last culprit could be the compressor, which is located on the outside of the fridge at the back. Unfortunately, if the compressor is the culprit of the noise, then you will need to replace the component as repair is not possible. This can be a costly replacement, so make sure you diagnose your fridge correctly to avoid an unnecessary and expensive bill.

The Inside

With self-defrosting fridges, they use a fan to circulate air. The noise may be caused by the fan and to test this, open your fridge and push in the light switch. If the noise becomes louder, the it is most likes the fan’s motor that’s faulty. Unfortunately, the only option is to replace the part.

The Bottom

If a rattling noise is coming from the bottom, then it is most likely the drain pan which may have come loose. All you need to do is make sure it is secure to stop the component wobbling – maybe with some duct tape. If something is faulty however, the part can most like be easily replaced. If it is faulty, it is best to replace, as any cracks or damages can cause you leaks to occur.
